Not only does the new DEX 3.15 (beta) include in-browser support for Beatport LINK and Beatsource LINK — DJs that mix in key received a big boost with a slew of new key detection and key mixing features.Mixing tracks on beat is one thing, but if you really want to take your mix sets to new heights you’ll want to mix your tracks in key — otherwise known as ‘Harmonic Mixing’. The closer the two tracks are in key the more infused the sound of your mix will be. When key mixing is performed correctly the seamless sound will have your listeners unsure where one song ends and the other begins. For example, If both tracks your mixing are in the key of C they will sound great when played together. However, other keys within a scale can also sound great when mixing with other keys. For example, another track in the key of Am will also sound great mixed with a track in the key of C. It would also work with G, which has ‘most notes’ in common with C. Confused yet?If you’re not a musician mixing in key has it’s challenges — but thankfully you have help: the circle of fifths. The circle of fifths is basically a compatibility chart and the new DEX 3.15 beta supports three variations of the ‘chart’. – we named it “Ferdinand’s Strip” after him. Here it is: So for a key of 2 (A or B), if you moved it down a note it’d be 7, up a note it’d be 9, down 2 notes it’d be 12, up 2 notes it’d be 4. This can be a useful thing to have, so we’ve included it in the downloadable, printable key graphics handout. Click here to get the free keymixing printable charts pack. The next step: Fuzzy Keymixing If we were giving this lesson just a few years ago (as indeed we did, many times), this is where it would end. We’d say that you should not always try to mix in key, because of the 24 possible keys, only four are compatible, so the chances are the track you want to play next won’t be in the same key. We’d say “don’t be a slave to keymixing – use it sparingly and enjoy the results when it makes sense”. But then two things came together to change all that. We call the result of this “Fuzzy Keymixing”, and if you want to take keymixing to the next level, you need to be doing this! We have a full article on Fuzzy Keymixing that you can read here, but in short, this is what happened: We realised that the Camelot “rule” (only mix into tiles on the wheel that share a “side”) was unnecessarily limiting “Key shift” technologies appeared in DJ software (where you can change the pitch, or key, without changing the tempo) Read this next: Algoriddim To Switch To Fuzzy Keymixing In djay Pro AI You see, it turns out that if you mix diagonally (ie to a tile adjacent but where only the corners are touching), it’s likely to work too. This is because those keys, too, contain many of the same musical notes as the starting key. This means a 2A track will not only likely mix into 1A, 3A and 2B, but into 1B and 3B as well. Or, to put it another way, you can disregard the letter entirely – ANY “2” track will likely work with ANY 1 or 3 track! That gives six potential musical key matches out of 24, instead of 4. We then realised that by “key shifting” (moving a track up or down using the functions in most DJ software and some hardware nowadays), all you need to do is move your incoming track up or down a maximum of two notes, and its number will ALWAYS match the other track. (This is important, because when “key shifting” tracks, you really want them to stay as close as possible to their original key so they don’t go too high or low.) Result: You can, potentially, mix any track into any other track, in key, and have it sound great! Perform amazing DJ mixes, every time: Mixing Power Skills To do this: Find the key shift feature on your software (nearly all software has it) or

3b 9t 28 hp 8f 62 7d 15 ahMany more rounds…If you thought that was it, we’re not even close. After the last round key was added, it goes back to the byte substitution stage, where each value is changed according to a predetermined table. Once that’s done, it’s back to shift rows and moving each row to the left by one, two or three spaces. Then it goes through the mix columns equation again. After that, another round key is added. It doesn’t stop there either. At the start, it was mentioned that AES has key sizes of either 128, 192 or 256-bits. When a 128-bit key is used, there are nine of these rounds. When a 192-bit key is used, there are 11. When a 256-bit key is used, there are 13. So the data goes through the byte substitution, shift rows, mix columns and round key steps up to thirteen times each, being altered at every stage. After these nine, 11 or 13 rounds, there is one additional round in which the data is only processed by the byte substitution, shift rows and add round key steps, but not the mix columns step. The mix columns step is taken out because at this stage, it would just be eating up processing power without altering the data, which would make the encryption method less efficient. To make things clearer, the entire AES encryption process goes:Key expansionAdd round keyByte substitutionShift rowsMix columnsAdd round key x 9, 11 or 13 times, depending on whether the key is 128, 192 or 256-bitByte substitutionShift rowsAdd round keyOnce the data has gone through this complex process, your original “buy me some potato chips please” comes out looking something like “ok23b8a0i3j 293uivnfqf98vs87a”. It seems like a completely random string of characters, but as you can see from these examples, it is actually the result of many different mathematical operations being applied to it again and again. What’s the point of each of these steps?A lot of things happen when our data is encrypted and it’s important to understand why. Key expansion is a critical step, because it gives us our keys for the later rounds. Otherwise, the same key would be added in each round, which would make AES easier to crack. In the first round, the initial key is added in order to begin the alteration of the plain text. The byte substitution step, where each of the data points is changed according to a predetermined table, also performs an essential role. It alters the data in a non-linear way, in order to apply confusion to the information. Confusion is a process that helps to hide the relationship between the encrypted data and the original message.Shift rows is also critical, performing what is known as diffusion. In cryptography, diffusion essentially means to transpose the data to add complication. By shifting the rows, the data is moved from its original position, further helping to obscure it. Mix columns acts in a similar way, altering the data vertically rather than
